Experiences in Purgatory
A frank Seminar (and panel discussion) on the year out experience & preparing for Masters (at CSA and elsewhere). Come and discuss the year out, let us know what your experience has been. Is it what you imagined (or will it be)? How is it been looking at other schools. Guests include Pierre Tatem, current Masters students after considerable time "outside" and L. Mark Taylor, Head of School.

Experiencing the CSA in St Vincent

Local television feature on CSA AS3 study tour to Kingstown, St Vincent in 1995. See interviews with CSA students, John Leonard (studio tutor) and Peter Francis. Interestingly, CSA never visited St Vincent again after this tour.

Laud the Dance

For a number of years, the 2D/3D design course taught by Alison West-Martin culminated in a dance performance. Some of these were taped, edited and now exist in the Library. In this session we pull a couple out and think of what could have been if the programme was not re-structured.

The Fountainhead

Screening of the 1948 film starring Gary Cooper and adapted from Ayn Rand's famous book. It tells the story of Architect Howard Roark who is as unyielding as the structures he builds.

Design Competition for CSA Year 2009

In 1988, the architectural education advisory committee (which was charged to formulate plans for the implementation of CSA), initiated an “Ideas Competition” to choose an architect for a new building to accommodate what was foreseen as a need for space as the fledgling school grew. The competition was open to all architects in the Caribbean region and received 12 entries. In the end, Arch. Lascelles Dixon of Jamaica was adjudged the winner. Suffice to say, the building that has been lived in and experienced over the past 8+ years is a “little” different than the winning entry.

20 years after the publication of the winners in the Jamaica Architects, we are afforded an opportunity to go back in time. We have experienced the current building (or can imagine) and are well aware of its flaws and limitations. We have experienced life at CSA and are well aware of the highs and lows. Now we must go back to 1988 and without the limitations that shaped Arch. Dixon’s design into what it is now, we must propose what the Caribbean School of Architecture should look like in 20 years (from 1988). In other words,

What would the ideal CSA building look or feel like in 2009?

Competition Rules

- This ideas competition is 20 hours long. It starts at 4pm, Wed. May 6 and ends 12 noon, Thursday, May 7. Entrants can enter at anytime during this period.

- Only present and past students and staff of the school are eligible for entry.

- Registration for entry must be in the form of a comment to this post stating your name (or the names of members of your team) and the nature of your affiliation with the school.

- Submission should take the form of 3 images (one of which must be a plan) emailed to csayear20@gmail.com on or before 12 noon May 7.

- There is no restriction on the amount or type of information in the images only that one image must be a plan of some sort.

- No identification must be on the images to facilitate blind judging.

- The email message that accompanies the image attachments must state your name as “registered” in the comments section of this post.

- Judging will take place shortly after the midday deadline. Announcement of the winner (and two runner-ups) will be at the opening ceremony of the CSA End of Year Exhibition and online (http://www.csa20.blogspot.com/).

- Judges will be Arch. Frans Repole, Arch. Susan Taylor and Dr. Elizabeth Pigou-Dennis.

- There will be no monetary (or likewise) prizes for this competition, however, the winner will be posted on this site (and any other online affiliations eg. Facebook) as well as hold pride of place at the CSA exhibition. Images from the winning entry will be used at every opportunity as part of the promotion of the school. The winner will also retain all copyright to the images.

Proposed Schedule of Activities

An interesting schedule of activities has been developed. The "celebration" will be over 24 hours long starting on Wednesday May 6th. While it is by no means final, this schedule gives a good indication of what will be happening.

The rest of time will be spent lyming, catching up as staff (past and present) and current students will certainly be at the school from midday.

These are just the activities that have a surety of occuring. Other activities have been suggested. If you have any suggestions please let us know (csayear20@gmail.com) so we could incorporate it. We are especially looking for stuff to do on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, as well as things others overseas could be involved in.

CSA Year 20 is alive!

The Event

CSA Year 20, a celebratory event is being planned at the moment to "softly" commemorate 20 academic years of CSA (if you don't know what CSA is then perhaps you should not be reading this). This will be a day-long event of activities culminating in the opening of the end of year exhibition for 2008/9 AY. The activity is meant to involve all current & former students (BE, AT, AS, Diploma, BSc, BA, MArch) and staff of the school. The proposed date is Thursday, May 7th 2009.

Among the first thoughts for the day are a series of screenings (moving and still images), a special exhibition, a 20 hour charette/design competition, general meet, greet and catch-up (we are hoping alumnae will take the day off or choose that week to visit Jamaica). A "committee" is in the process of being formed and will be dutifully headed by R. Bailey (Kermit) and R. Picart (Pik).
We need your help in the following ways:

Suggest a keynote speaker to open the exhibition (or the day)
suggestions how we could spend the day
links/connections to classmates
updates on your activities
updates on where you are (we intend to exhibit a map of the world)
videos of CSA
Testimonies/stories/written pieces of your CSA experience (Remember when...)
volunteer to help (setting up, monetary (we're serious), playing host, graphics etc.)

your current work (privately or heavily involved in)
work while at school (scan those sketches and drawings)
study tours, field trips, out-of-studio experiences

This site will be CSA Year 20 central for the next six weeks. All news of planning and details of the event will originate here. We will set up a Facebook event page but it will all start/be found here. We will put up some of the best images and reminisces as well as spark some discussions (such as what if L. Mark Taylor...?) here.

We hope that you will share with us and try to be with us for the day (or half day) on that Thursday.

CSA Year 20 is a one day event to celebrate in an understated manner the 20th academic year of the Caribbean School of Architecture. The working date of this event is May 7th 2009.

Welcome to the official "barebones" webspace for the CSA Year 20 event. This medium will be used to update those interested about the planning of the event as well as provide information related to this and other end of year activities of the school.

Over the next 2 months we will be finalizing many details of the events including the "speakers", workshops, screenings and exhibition details.
